Call for Proposals

Online submission of Institutes, Workshops, Scientific Presentations, SIGs and Professional Development Luncheons

From natural disasters to dating violence, family conflict to devastating illnesses, and parental loss to living in foster care, every day adolescents and young adults in the United States and around the world experience and witness profound traumatic events. Sometimes these events affect entire cities, other times just schools or an individual are affected, but, regardless of size, each of these events has the potential to profoundly change the lives of the youth who experience them. Many adolescents traverse these experiences with strength and resilience, while others find it more difficult to recover from the impact trauma has on their lives. As adolescent health professionals, we have a critical role in identifying avenues – through clinical care, intervention and prevention efforts, research, advocacy, and/or policy setting – to help mitigate the impact of trauma on teens.

The theme for the 2012 SAHM annual meeting, “Impact of Trauma on Teens: Building the Safety Net” will explore what is known, highlight innovative programs and research, and develop strategies for improving the safety net in our own communities. The meeting will be held March 14-17 at the Sheraton New Orleans.

We invite you to submit a research abstract or proposal for a Workshop, Institute, SIG or Professional Development Luncheon, to be considered for the 2012 meeting.

While all submissions are welcome, we especially encourage proposals that are related to our theme. We would like to see proposals for presentations that will challenge us to move beyond our standard practices and that will provide novel ideas and avenues for clinical care, research, interventions, and policies.

Please note that as of the 2011 meeting, Special Interest Groups and Professional Development Luncheons are required to submit an abstract if they are interested in receiving CME credit. Rooms will be preferentially assigned to SIGs and Luncheons providing CE/CME credit. Details on applying for SIGs and Professional Development Luncheons are provided below.

INSTITUTES

  • Institute presentations are typically three and one-half hours in length, but are scheduled for four hours to allow for questions and breaks.
  • Unless specified, institutes may have as many as 80 participants. Please indicate if you need to limit your session to a certain number of participants, and provide a rationale for the limitation.
  • There is a limit of three (3) leaders per Institute.
  • “Outsourcing” is not permitted: leaders and presenters cannot receive outside financial support for their presentations at the meeting.
  • There are no limitations on the number of Institute proposals an individual can submit.  An individual may appear as a leader of more than one Institute.
  • The Program Committee is responsible for the review and selection of Institutes. It is possible that the Program Committee may decide that the submission may be better presented in another venue (i.e., workshop). If this is the case, the primary leader will be notified in advance, to garner his or her interest in presenting the submission in an alternate venue.

WORKSHOPS

  • Workshop presentations are two hours in length.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LUNCHEONS

  • Leaders of Professional Development (PD) Luncheons may choose to present a one-hour session that receives CE/CME or request a room for a one-hour meeting. Due to limited conference space and rooms, we will only be able to have a small number of Professional Development (PD) Luncheons that can be housed within individual rooms. Only PD luncheons receiving CE/CME will be guaranteed an individual room. Applicants who are not accepted for CE/CME may be offered shared meeting space with other PD luncheons.
  • To be considered for a CE/CME session, submit a description and three learning objectives along with the presenters’ financial disclosures and CVs.
  • To be considered for a one-hour meeting, submit a proposal that includes a summary of the presentation and discussion to occur during the meeting, as well as the primary leaders’ names and contact information.
  • Luncheons will be one (1) hour in length.
  • There is a limit of two (2) leaders per luncheon.

SCIENTIFIC PRESENTATIONS
Research abstracts will be presented in one of two formats, an Oral Platform Presentation or a Poster Presentation.

  • Platform Research Presentations
    The platform research presentations provide an opportunity for investigators to present research in an oral form to a large audience followed by a brief question and answer period. The goal of the platform presentations is to exhibit high-quality, scientific research on state-of-the-art adolescent and young adult health. Oral presentations will be ten minutes in length, followed by a five minute question-and-answer period. Accepted oral presentations must be developed using Microsoft PowerPoint®. Due to time constraints, video and audio clips will be allowed only if they are embedded within the PowerPoint presentation and with permission from the Abstract Review Sub-Committee Chair. Note: submission for consideration of an Oral Presentation does NOT guarantee acceptance. The submission may be accepted for a poster presentation or may not be accepted for presentation at all.

  • Poster Presentations
    Posters will be displayed for several hours to allow attendees to review the research. There will be designated times during which authors will be available to discuss the presented findings and answer questions.

  • SAHM/Mead Johnson Nutritionals New Investigator Award
    The New Investigator Award recognizes the highest quality research from an individual in training or someone who has completed their training within the past five calendar years. Primary authors who wish to be considered for this award must ask a senior SAHM member to provide a letter of nomination which details the significance of the research to adolescent health care. Eligibility criteria include the following:

    1. Candidates must be either in training or have completed their fellowship (or graduate training) within the past five calendar years;
    2. Research must be in an area of knowledge unique to the development and health care needs of adolescents;
    3. The award will be given for a specific piece of research and is not dependent upon the awardee's total research;
    4. The submission should substantively reflect the work of the new investigator, rather than that of a mentor or co-author;
    5. Candidate need not be a member of SAHM, but if chosen as a finalist, must be nominated by a member of SAHM; and
    6. The New Investigator Award recipient MUST submit his/her manuscript to the Journal of Adolescent Health (JAH) for right of first refusal. Should the first author wish to be considered for the New Investigator Award, he or she must click the box on the online submission site indicating eligibility for the New Investigator Award.

    Authors of the top five abstracts eligible for the New Investigator Award will be notified at the same time that all abstract acceptances are mailed. These authors will be asked to send a complete packet of materials to the Awards Committee at the SAHM National Office. The completed packet will include a biographical sketch, curriculum vitae, letter of nomination by a SAHM member that details the significance of the research to adolescent health care, a letter of support by a senior investigator, and a manuscript (background, methods, results, and conclusion). The New Investigator Award recipient MUST submit his/her manuscript to JAH for right of first refusal.

  • Robert H. DuRant Award for Statistical Rigor and Innovation in Adolescent Health Research
    The DuRant Award recognizes the abstract submission with the most sophisticated methodology or analytical approach. The top five papers that are not New Investigator finalists will be identified by the Abstract Review Committee, and provided to the Awards Committee for consideration. The winner will be recognized at the meeting. Investigators who wish to be considered for the DuRant Award should submit as a Platform Presentation and provide the additional page of Methods/Results.

Meeting Registration

In March 2006, the SAHM Board of Directors reaffirmed its long-standing policy requiring that all research presenters register for a minimum of one day, as SAHM publishes this research in the Journal of Adolescent Health and provides these researchers with a national forum to share their work.
