SAHM 2011 Annual Meeting
Screening in Adolescents: Is an Ounce of Prevention Worth a Pound of Cure?
March 29 - April 1, 2011
Sheraton Seattle
Seattle, WA, USA

Call for online submission of Institutes,
Scientific Presentations and Workshops

Our online submission venue is now available for the submission of workshops, institutes, and/or scientific presentations.  The title of this year’s meeting is Screening in Adolescents: Is an Ounce of Prevention Worth a Pound of Cure?

Screening is an important strategy for improving the detection of medical and mental health problems during adolescence.  Comprehensive screening, including a psychosocial assessment during a well adolescent visit, is considered to be the gold standard to optimize health and well-being of the teens we serve.  However, in some instances, screening is not cost-effective or time-efficient. Perhaps, more importantly, there is a lack of clear evidence for the necessity of screening, especially when providing primary care services to youth.  Finally, recommendations for screening of some disorders have changed.  For example, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Periodic Health Examination currently recommends screening adolescents for depressive disorders but not teaching testicular self-exams.  In this meeting, we will confront these controversies in an effort to better understand what works, what doesn’t work and what needs work.

While submissions for workshops, institutes or scientific presentations are not required to be consistent with the theme of the annual meeting, we encourage you to submit proposals for workshops and/or institutes that will be related to this topic area.

SCIENTIFIC PRESENTATIONS
• Platform Research Presentations
The platform research presentations provide an opportunity for investigators to present research in an oral presentation to a large audience followed by a brief question and answer period. The goal of the platform presentations is to exhibit high-quality, scientific research on state-of-the-art adolescent and young adult health. Oral presentations should be ten minutes in length, followed by a five minute question-and-answer period. Accepted oral presentations must be developed using Microsoft PowerPoint®. Due to time constraints, video and audio clips will be allowed only if they are embedded within the PowerPoint presentation and with the Abstract Review Sub-Committee Chair’s permission. Note: submission for consideration for an Oral Presentation does NOT guarantee acceptance. The submission may be accepted for a poster presentation or may not be accepted for presentation at all.

• Poster Presentations
Posters will be available so that attendees may review the research during the general poster sessions. There will be designated times during which authors will be available to discuss the presented findings and answer questions.

• New Investigator Award
As in the past, first authors who are eligible for the New Investigator Award should talk with a senior member of SAHM about their research efforts and indicate in the submission that they wish to be considered for this award. Eligibility criteria include the following:

1. Candidates must be either in training or have completed their fellowship (or graduate training) within the past five calendar years;
2. Research must be in an area of knowledge unique to the development and health care needs of adolescents;
3. The award will be given for a specific piece of research and is not dependent upon the awardee's total research;
4. Candidates need not be a member of SAHM, but if chosen as a finalist, must be nominated by a member of SAHM; and
5. The New Investigator Award recipient MUST submit his/her manuscript to the Journal of Adolescent Health (JAH) for right of first refusal. Should the first author wish to be considered for the New Investigator Award, he or she must click the box on the online submission site indicating that the first author is eligible for the New Investigator Award.

Authors of the top 5 abstracts eligible for the New Investigator Award will be notified at the same time all abstract acceptances are mailed. These authors will be asked to send a complete packet of materials by Friday, November 26, 2010 to the Awards Committee at the SAHM National Office. The completed packet will include a biographical sketch, curriculum vitae, letter of nomination by a SAHM member that designates the significance of the research to adolescent health care, a letter of support by a senior investigator, and a manuscript (background, methods, results, conclusion). The New Investigator Award recipient MUST submit his/her manuscript to JAH for right of first refusal.

Meeting Registration

In March 2006, the SAHM Board of Directors reaffirmed its long-standing policy requiring that all research presenters register for a minimum of one day as SAHM provides these researchers with a national forum to share their research and publishes this research in the Journal of Adolescent Health.
