The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM) is pleased to offer a travel award scholarship program to enable adolescent health professionals from low and middle income countries (LMIC) to attend the 2017 SAHM Annual Meeting held on March 8-11, 2017 in New Orleans, LA, USA.  The SAHM annual meeting is the premier, multidisciplinary, educational event in adolescent medicine and health. The meeting offers innovative research, clinical workshops and discussion forums for attendees from around the world.  The scholarship award is intended to cover all travel and registration costs.
The application deadline is Friday, November 25, 2016.

Eligibility Criteria
The applicant must….
  • Be a resident of a country categorized by the World Bank as either Zone #3 or Zone #4 - (view chart)
  • Have an established interest in adolescent health as evidenced by employment, training, research, teaching or policy activities
  • Be committed to sharing insights from the SAHM meeting with other providers in their country upon their return.
  • Be proficient in written and spoken English
  • Be eligible to apply for a visa for travel to the US if their application is successful
Membership of SAHM is not required to apply for this award. 


Application Procedure

Applicants are asked to submit the following:
  • Completed application form
  • Curriculum vitae (maximum 4 pages), highlighting clinical, research, policy or teaching experience in adolescent health, relevant education and training, and any relevant clinical or research publications or other outputs (e.g. contributions to adolescent health policy)
  • Reference from an adolescent health professional/policy maker or other relevant individual (including either employer or supervisor) in your country to confirm the benefit of your attendance at the SAHM Annual Meeting (please limit to one page)
Applicants are asked to send completed materials to by Friday, November 25, 2016.

After the deadline, candidates will be shortlisted and finalists will undergo an interview by phone or Skype for the final selection procedure. Scholarship winners will be announced in early January, 2017

Awardee Responsibilities
During the meeting:
  • Attend the New Member/Meeting Attendee meeting
    • Scheduled on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 - 11:45am - 12:45 pm
  • Attend the Welcome Reception
    • Scheduled on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 -  6:30 - 8:00 pm
  • Meet the SAHM Executive Committee during the meeting
    • To be scheduled once scholarship awardees are identified
  • Attend the International Chapter meeting
    • Exact date and time TBA
  • Attend the International Chapter dinner (registration included in award)
    • Scheduled on Thursday, March 9, 2017 - 7:00pm (location TBA) 
After the meeting (brief description below, additional details will be provided to each award recipient):
  • Make contact with an designated SAHM member partner, ideally from the same region 
  • Submit SAHM meeting report no more than 6 weeks after the meeting
  • Submit ‘sharing insights from SAHM’ meeting report with local / national colleagues no more than 6 months after the meeting
  • Telephone/Skype call with a SAHM International Chapter colleague 12 months after the meeting

Award Budget
The award scholarship is intended to cover all related costs to attending the SAHM 2017 Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA, USA. 
What the award includes:
  • Roundtrip air fare
  • Hotel accommodation – New Orleans Marriot, New Orleans, LA, USA - (3/7/2017 through 3/11/2017)
  • Airport transfer fee (shuttle bus)
  • Annual meeting registration fee – all 4 days
What the award does not include:
  • Onward/connecting flights to other US destinations
  • US Visa application fee
  • Cost of meals
  • Other incidental costs
