The SAHM Visiting Professor in Adolescent Medicine was established in 1986 with the first award being given in 1987. The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine offers this annual event to provide an educational experience in adolescent medicine to a group of healthcare providers who may not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from the Professor's expertise.

In March 2003, this award was re-named the Adele D. Hofmann Visiting Professor in Adolescent Medicine and Health to honor her contributions to the field of Adolescent Medicine and Health. Dr. Hofmann’s groundbreaking work in the 1960s and 1970s redefined how the medical community perceived and served adolescents. During her 45-year career, she made profound contributions in such areas as: the legal rights of minors, teenage sexuality, adolescent behavior and the treatment of high-risk youth. The award is financially supported by Dr. Hofmann's children, Annie Gardiner and Peter Hofmann.
