  • $50.00  Submission fee for abstracts received Aug. 1, 2009 – Aug. 28, 2009

Abstract Requirements
Research abstracts may vary widely to include any area of adolescent and young adult health. The two venues for research presentations are ten minute platform (oral) presentations and poster presentations. All accepted abstracts will be published in a supplement to the February 2010 issue of Journal of Adolescent Health.

Please note: Submitted abstracts of any type or format cannot have been presented at a national meeting or published prior to the April 2010 SAM meeting.

  • Abstract submissions are limited to 3,500 characters. This includes spaces and the title of your abstract. The character counter updates on the submission screen each time you click on “Save.”
  • You are allowed up to one table per abstract to be published within the abstract body or at the end of your abstract.
  • The abstract title should not contain brand names, only generic versions of a product, service, company or device. A brand name can be mentioned once in the abstract body, if absolutely necessary to explain the purpose or nature of a study.
  • When entering your abstract, you will be asked to submit the information using these headings: Purpose, Methods, Results, Conclusions and Sources of support. By completing these sections, your final abstract will briefly describe the purpose of the study or investigation, the basic methods (study subjects and analytical methods), the results (giving specific data and the statistical significance, if possible), and the principal conclusion. Emphasize new and important aspects of the study.

Case Submissions
Review of abstracts related to case material (a single case or a small series) will depend on whether cases present new or controversial findings likely to stimulate research. These abstracts will be subject to the same critical review of methodology and clarity as are original research. All accepted cases (and small series) and most program descriptions will be presented in the poster session. Therefore, actual data should not be incorporated into the structured abstract.

Platform Research Presentations
The platform research presentations provide an opportunity for investigators to present research in an oral presentation to a large audience followed by a brief question and answer period. The goal of the platform presentations is to exhibit high-quality, scientific research on state-of-the-art adolescent and young adult health.

Oral presentations should be ten minutes in length, followed by a five minute question-and-answer period. Accepted oral presentations must be developed using Microsoft PowerPoint®. Due to time constraints, video and audio clips will be allowed only if they are embedded within the PowerPoint presentation and with the Abstract Review Sub-Committee Chair’s permission.

Poster Presentations
Posters will be available so that attendees may review the research during the general poster sessions. There will be designated times during which authors will be available  to discuss the presented findings and answer questions.

New Investigator Award
As in the past, first authors who are eligible for the New Investigator Award should talk with a senior member of SAM about their research efforts and indicate in the submission that they wish to be considered for this award. Eligibility criteria include the following:

  • Candidates must be either in training or have completed their fellowship (or graduate training) within the past five calendar years;
  • Research must be in an area of knowledge unique to the development and health care needs of adolescents;
  • The award will be given for a specific piece of research and is not dependent upon the awardee's total research;
  • Candidates need not be a member of SAM, but if chosen as a finalist, must be nominated by a member of SAM; and
  • The New Investigator Award recipient MUST submit his/her manuscript to the Journal of Adolescent Health (JAH) for right of first refusal. Should the first author wish to be considered for the New Investigator Award, he or she must click the box on the online submission site indicating that the first author is eligible for the New Investigator Award.

Authors of the top 5 abstracts eligible for the New Investigator Award will be notified at the same time all abstract acceptances are mailed. These authors will be asked to send a complete packet of materials by Friday, November 28, 2009 to the Awards Committee at the SAM National Office. The completed packet will include a biographical sketch, curriculum vitae, letter of nomination by a SAM member that designates the significance of the research to adolescent health care, a letter of support by a senior investigator, and a manuscript (background, methods, results, conclusion). The New Investigator Award recipient MUST submit his/her manuscript to JAH for right of first refusal.

Meeting Registration
In March 2006, the SAM Board of Directors reaffirmed its long-standing policy requiring that all research presenters register for a minimum of one day as SAM provides these researchers with a national forum to share their research and publishes this research in the Journal of Adolescent Health.
