Futures Center for Education in Child Growth and Development,
Behavior, and Adolescent Health
Sponsored by Children's Hospital, Boston, and Maternal and
Child health Bureau, this site contains 29 educational modules
that focus on a learner-centered, case-based approach to teaching
specific topics in child growth, development, behavior, and
adolescent health (e.g., delayed puberty, learning disorders,
adolescent health screening, contraception, anorexia nervosa,
alcohol abuse, and depression) to medical residents and other
medical professionals.
Children
Now
Children Now is a nonpartisan, independent advocacy voice
for children and youth of national scope, but with special
focus on California. It provides up-to-date information on
the status of children and youth; and outreach to parents,
lawmakers, citizens, business, media and community leaders.
This site provides information for parents about "talking
with kids about tough issues"; fact sheets on a variety of
child and teen health and health care delivery issues; and
an annotated publications list including a series on the effects
of television.
Commonwealth
Fund
The Commonwealth Fund is a philanthropic organization which
conducts surveys and supports projects in a number of health-related
areas including women's health and child health. This site
describes past and presently funded programs, grant guidelines,
and organizational details. An extensive publications list
also is available, many with summaries or full text on-line.
Of note for adolescents are executive summaries and reports
of surveys on youth mentoring, dropping out of school, health
of adolescent girls, and health of adolescent boys (see site
pages on child health, women's health and related publication
lists).
Federal
Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics (ChildStats)
The Forum, also known as ChildStats, is composed of participants
from across government agencies and private research organizations.
It fosters coordination, collaboration, and integration of
federal data on children and families. The full texts of America's
Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being
and Nurturing Fatherhood are available on-line. The
site also provides a wide range of links to other federal
and non-federal Web sites with related statistics such as
youth indicators, child health, percentage distribution of
children under age 18 by race and ethnicity, and high school
completion rates.
Society for Prevention Research
The Society for Prevention Research (SPR) seeks to advance science-based prevention programs and policies through empirical research. The international membership of the organization includes scientists, practitioners, advocates, administrators, and policy makers who are concerned with the prevention of social, physical, and mental health problems and the promotion of health, safety, and well-being. SPR holds an annual conference during which research is presented on all content areas of public health, education, human services, criminal justice and medical science. Website includes a monograph on developing monitoring systems that enable communities to track and prevent common youth problems.
