Internists in Adolescent Medicine
This new special interest group was created to bring together
internists who practice adolescent medicine.
As you may be aware, 100% of US adolescent medicine fellowship
training programs are currently based in departments of pediatrics.
Medical students and residents are often under the impression
that adolescent medicine training must be obtained after first
completing pediatric residency training. Yet many providers
of adolescent health care received their medical training
through departments of internal medicine.
As a special interest group, we hope to draw from the strengths
and interests of our internal medicine colleagues. Particular
issues we would like to address include:
- Should internal medicine residency training programs have
more rigorous training requirements in adolescent medicine
(similar to requirements for pediatric residency training
programs)?
- Should we develop a curriculum in adolescent medicine
for internal medicine residency training programs?
- How can we interest medical students and internal medicine
residents in adolescent health care?
- Is it possible to practice general internal medicine as
well as provide sub- specialized care in adolescent medicine?
We welcome your input as well as any topics you would like
to discuss. Please join us.
