Rocky Mountain Regional Chapter

The Rocky Mountain Regional Chapter of SAM, chartered Dec. 1980 and established in 1981, is a diverse group of physicians, PA/NPs, nurses, public health professionals and others whose interests and careers focus on the well-being of teens and young adults. The RM Regional Chapter represents the six states of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada. Our paid membership group is approximately 70, many located in Colorado, but we maintain an active e-mail Distribution List of over 100 interested in chapter news, regional, and national issues in adolescent health. The annual membership fee is $20.00. Membership is not required to attend the quarterly educational dinner meetings or to be on the e-mail distribution list.

Chapter Activities 2006:

  • Annual Spring Dinner (April 26, 2006) “Roads Less Traveled -Taking Care of Unique Populations of Adolescents in Colorado,” David W. Wells, MD. During the business meeting, the chapter presents the Kathleen Anne Mullen Award for “Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Adolescent Health in the Rocky Mountain Region”. The recipient for 2006 was David W. Wells, MD, for his 22-year career providing clinical care at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, teaching countless medical residents, other trainees, and for long-time service on numerous Colorado Child Health Advisory Councils in the past decades. Dr. Wells has been Medical Director of the Colorado state Division of Youth Corrections since 1994, where he continues to provide outstanding leadership and advocacy for Colorado’s adjudicated youth.

  • Annual Educational Conference (October 27, 2006) “Hot Topics in Adolescent Medicine,” re-established after a 9 year hiatus. The Keynote speaker was Susan M. Coupey, MD, from The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, Bronx, NY. The chapter also established a new tradition by naming the annual conference keynote speaker’s address the “Roberta K Beach Keynote Address,” honoring Robin’s many years and contributions to the field.
