Southern California Regional Chapter

Also known as SoCAL SAM, the Southern California Regional Chapter includes among its membership several past presidents of the Society for Adolescent Medicine (Dale Garell, Richard MacKenzie, Lonnie Zeltzer, Lawrence Neinstein, and Manuel Schydlower). Our membership continues to include those dedicated to improving the health and well being of adolescents here in the Southern California area and worldwide.

As Los Angeles was the original home of the national office of the Society for Adolescent Medicine from the time of its inception in 1968 until 1990, a separate Regional Chapter was not formed until 1991. Since then, the members of SoCAL SAM have remained fierce advocates for adolescents and continue to carry out the Society’s mission and vision and promote its core values of excellence, leadership, integrity and collaboration.

Our chapter meets annually at the national conference and, at least, once a year locally. Given the geographic area covered by SoCAL SAM, much of our correspondence is via e-mail and provisions are made for teleconferencing at local meetings to accommodate our numerous members. We actively take part in local conferences including, but not limited to the Adolescent Health Collaborative and meetings of the local chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

All those who work with adolescents in the Southern California area are welcome to join. Currently, members of the Southern California Regional Chapter are not required to be members of the national organization and Chapter members do not pay Chapter dues.

For more information, please contact the president of the SoCAL SAM Regional Chapter, Meera Beharry, MD at 323-361-3169 or mbeharry@chla.usc.edu or our treasurer-secretary, Shelley Aggarwal, MD at 323-361-3118 or saggarwal@chla.usc.edu
