Sports Medicine
The SAM Sports Medicine Special Interest
Group was re-formed in 2002 under the premise that adolescent
health practitioners are in a position to provide the vast
majority of sports medicine to adolescent athletes. In its
first year, the SIG defined four primary areas of interest:
the challenges of practicing adolescent sports medicine, including
specific case scenarios; the important role of adolescent
specialists in teaching sports medicine to trainees; collaborative
efforts to address the paucity of research in adolescent sports
medicine; and advocating for the special needs of the adolescent
athletes, including allied health care providers such as certified
athletic trainers in schools.
The Sports Medicine SIG has also coordinated institutes and
workshops for SAM Annual meetings, including "Common
Athletic Injuries in Female Adolescents," "Sideline
Preparedness for the Adolescent Specialist," "Low
Back Pain in the Adolescent," and "Fueling the Athlete."
