Awards and Honors

Each year, SAHM recognizes adolescent health professionals for their commitment to furthering the field and advancing the cause of adolescent health and well-being. A description of our various awards and the list of the 2023 winners follows below.

Outstanding Achievement in Adolescent Health and Medicine

This award recognize individuals nationally and internationally for their body of work and commitment to improving the health of and health care resources for adolescents and young adults. This is SAHM’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Charles E. Irwin, Jr. New Investigator

This award recognizes professionals who, through excellence in research, promote the development, synthesis, and dissemination of scientific and scholarly knowledge unique to the development and health care needs of adolescents.

Hilary E.C Millar Award for Innovative Approaches to Adolescent Health Care

This award is presented to any national or international individual, organization, or agency involved in adolescent health care, defined in its broadest sense.

Adele D. Hofmann Visiting Professor in Adolescent Medicine and Health

The intent of this award is to provide an educational experience in adolescent medicine for a group of healthcare providers who may not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from the Professor’s expertise.

Litt Visiting Professor in Adolescent Health Research

The intent of this award is to provide an educational experience in adolescent health research for a group of healthcare providers who may not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from the Professor’s expertise. The Visiting Professorship Program is intended to help research, policy and training programs to become better equipped to conduct adolescent health-focused research, as well as to improve the ability of the researchers to successfully compete for funding for a research program.

Robert H. DuRant Award for Statistical Rigor and Innovation in Adolescent Health Research

Established in honor of SAHM Past President Robert H. DuRant, PhD, FSAHM, who passed away in late 2009, this award fosters statistical rigor, innovation and excellence in research.

Regional Chapter Recognition Award

Established in 1997, this award recognizes a Regional Chapter member for outstanding service to a particular chapter.

Career Development Award in Adolescent Health 

This award is directed at promoting interest in a career in the field of adolescent health.

Vaughn Rickert Vaccine Research Award

Established in honor of SAHM Past President Dr. Vaughn Rickert, who passed away in 2015, this award recognizes the top-rated abstract submission focused on vaccination research.

Lawrence Neinstein Award in Young Adult Health 

The Lawrence S. Neinstein Award in Young Adult Health has been established in memory of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM) Past President Dr. Larry Neinstein for his numerous contributions to the health of adolescents and young adults.

LGBTQIA Award

The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM) is excited to announce the second annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTQIA) Adolescent and Young Adult Health Research Award. The overall goal of this annual award is to support research and program evaluation focused on LGBTQIA adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 26.

Racial Justice and Health Equity Award

‎The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM) is excited to announce the first annual SAHM Racial Justice and Health Equity Award. ‎The purpose of this annual award is to support research and program evaluation focused on ‎racial justice and/or health equity within adolescent health and medicine.
