Last week, the American College of Physicians published an updated policy on gun violence prevention. The National Rifle Association responded on Twitter implying that physicians should not be weighing in and should instead “stay in their lane.” The responses that followed, from physicians of many specialties, including pediatrics, have been overwhelming and even garnered national media attention. Physicians began using #thisisourlane on Twitter to offer powerful personal examples about how essential gun violence prevention is to practicing medicine.
A partner organization is currently circulating an open letter to the National Rifle Association for sign on by individual physicians. We are sharing this link with you in case you are interested in signing on in your individual capacity. The letter will be posted tomorrow, but the letter organizers have indicated that they will be able to continue to accept signatures and stories after this deadline.
